You’ve probably heard about the new series of tariffs imposed on products from China. As we publish this blog post, they’ve reached a total of 245%. Since China is America’s largest importer of foreign goods, that’s going to increase prices on all sorts of products, including kitchen appliances.

We always work to keep our customers in the loop about price increases and other business decisions. Due to several factors (e.g., tariffs, inflation, the rising cost of raw materials), our costs have increased. We’ll absorb some of those costs, of course, but we’re planning to raise our prices in May to ensure the long-term sustainability of our operations and ensure that every Hauslane product continues to meet the highest standards for design, durability, and performance.

We want to give you a heads up because most people think things over before purchasing kitchen appliances, and we get that!

Just be sure to buy before May 2nd if you want to take advantage of the lowest prices you’ll see in 2025.

Now, you may have some questions. Why did we make this decision? Why do we buy from China rather than looking for alternative suppliers? How do tariffs impact our business?

We’ll answer all these questions, so keep reading if you’re curious to learn more.

How Tariffs and Economic Conditions Impact Our Business

Tariffs are essentially taxes that governments impose on goods imported from other countries. Sometimes they’re imposed to promote domestic manufacturing, other times they’re done in retaliation for tariffs imposed by trading partners.

Whenever a country applies tariffs on imports from another country, it becomes more expensive for retailers (like Hauslane) to purchase these products from our manufacturers. In fact, it’s not just the cost of the fully manufactured product that goes up. It also raises the cost of the raw goods required to produce those products, hurting manufacturer profits as well.

For example, China imports a great deal of steel from Japan. The two countries are part of a free trade agreement, but if China suddenly imposed tariffs on Japanese steel, then Chinese manufacturers would have to raise their prices to stay in business.

Tariffs also create gaps and disruptions in the global supply chain, and this has a ripple effect that raises costs for everyone down the line. Everyone sees an increase in labor costs, warehousing, shipping, and logistics. Each company bears some of the burden, earning less and raising prices. The result is lower profits for businesses and higher prices for end consumers like you.

Why the Trade War with China Impacts Everyone

China is our third-largest trading partner. We export $140 billion worth of U.S. goods to China each year, and they’re our largest importer (selling us over $440 billion in Chinese goods).

Despite our political and cultural differences, the U.S. has developed a solid business relationship with China in recent decades, and many of the high-quality products you love are manufactured there. Forty years ago, “Made in China” implied lower quality, but today they manufacture everything from iPhones to Volkswagens.

Hauslane range hoods are manufactured in China as well, and as a U.S. company, we’re seeing our costs skyrocket due to inflation, rising raw material costs, increased freight and shipping rates, and the tariffs themselves.

Many of these tariffs are retaliatory tariffs. Since China imposes tariffs on the U.S., the U.S. imposes tariffs in return. Whether or not we agree with that approach, the result is economic disruption and higher prices for everyone.

Some believe it’s a matter of fairness. Others, like former President Ronald Reagan, considered tariffs a losing proposition for everyone. He once said that imposing retaliatory tariffs is like sitting in a boat with a madman who shoots a hole in the boat’s floor. To get revenge, you shoot another hole in the boat. Now everyone is sinking twice as fast.

How Tariffs Raise Prices

Our government has been gradually raising tariffs on China over the past 8 years, culminating in the latest round of increases in April 2025.

To get a sense of what this looks like, let’s take three kitchen appliances that were affected by the tariffs: Range hoods, dishwashers, and microwaves. For the sake of simplicity, let’s imagine each of these items costs $100.

Tariffs on Range Hoods, Ovens, and Refrigerators

Trade policy: increase to 245% april 15, 2025 (current) $345

As you can see, the cost to purchase a $100 range hood is now $345, after years of tariff hikes. And this does not even factor inflation, increased labor costs, raw materials costs, and other elements into the equation.

Many rounds of tariffs for dishwashers have resulted in a 107.5% increase, and tariffs on microwaves have experienced a 102.5% increase, more than doubling the cost for distributors. It all equates to higher prices for consumers.

Why We Chose to Raise Prices

As our costs increase, we’ll absorb some of those costs, but we retailers like us couldn’t stay in business if we absorbed all of it, without raising prices. Negotiations between China and the U.S. are ongoing, and if tariff rates drop, we’ll of course revisit our prices.

You may be wondering why we continue to do business with China, given the higher costs for us and its ultimate impact on our prices. This wasn’t a decision we took lightly, but despite the price increases, no one can match the quality and value our Chinese business partners provide.

In theory, we could import inferior products from other manufacturers to keep prices down, but the final product wouldn’t live up to the superior design, features, and craftsmanship that define the Hauslane brand. There’s just no substitute for what we’ve built with our partners.

Operating at lower margins hampers a manufacturer’s ability to invest in research, development, and quality parts. At the same time, it impacts our ability to ensure top-notch customer service and support, comprehensive warranty plans, and reliable product performance.

Lastly, it allows us to future-proof our operations, ensuring we’ll provide high-quality kitchen appliances at reasonable prices for many years to come.
