Don't want to buy a makeup air filter?

Discover the Hauslane range hoods that let you limit the unit's power to under 400 CFM with Power Control Technology™.

Hauslane range hoods are known for their strong blower power, so why would you limit suction power on a device that hits an impressive 860+ CFM?

Some states have building codes requiring you to buy a makeup filter for units that exceed 400 CFM in suction power—unless that unit allows you to limit suction power. That's why Hauslane currently sells 6 high-quality range hoods that feature Power Control Technology™ (which limits power to under 400 CFM).

Keep reading to learn about makeup air requirements for range hoods and how you can avoid buying and installing a makeup air filter.

What is a makeup air filter?

A makeup air filter adds air back into a home to replace the air that a range hood removes. Range hoods featuring blowers with strong suction power, measured in Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM), sometimes require a makeup air filter in order to be code-compliant. That is, unless the unit has built-in technology that lets you reduce its suction power to ratings under 400 CFM.

Who needs a makeup air filter?

If you own a range hood that goes over 400 CFM (with no option to reduce power), you may need a makeup filter if it's required by state or local building codes. We wrote an article about building codes for range hoods, which includes information about makeup air requirements for California, Washington, Texas, New York, and Michigan.

Of course, there are other reasons you might need a makeup filter that have nothing to do with building codes. Makeup air filters can come in handy for:

  • Small kitchens
  • Poorly ventilated kitchens
  • Home chefs who use range hoods for extended periods of time

If you're required to have a makeup filter but don't feel like buying or installing one, you have two options if you want to remain code-compliant.

Option #1: Buy a range hood that uses Power Control Technology™ to limit CFM to 400

Option #2: Buy a range hood that doesn't exceed 400 CFM

Hauslane models with Power Control Technology™

You can search Hauslane for range hoods that allow you to limit blower power to under 400 CFM by selecting the filter that reads "CFM Limiter." If you do that, the website will only show range hoods (within the category you're searching) that come with Power Control Technology™.

At the time of publication, we sell 6 models with Power Control Technology™:

Built-in Range Hoods with Power Control Technology™

Island Range Hoods with Power Control Technology™

We also currently sell an under-cabinet range hood that doesn't go higher than 400 CFM. That's the UC-B018 Under-Cabinet Range Hood.

Of course, our product line is always expanding, so feel free to search Hauslane range hoods and select either the "CFM Limiter" or the "400 CFM" filter to find all the range hoods in either category.
