What are the Main Types of Ranges?

By Hauslane ∙ 5 mins read

Looking for a new range hood? This appliance is critical to keeping your kitchen looking clean and smelling fresh. They provide critical ventilation and suction to remove harmful cooking odors. With so many different models on the market, it can be hard to know which one is the best fit for your needs.

We’ve gathered a list of the most common types of range hoods below. You’ll find tips and advice for selecting the ideal model of kitchen range hood for your home.

The 5 Different Types of Range Hoods

1. Under Cabinet

Have cabinets or storage above your stove? No need to give up your storage for ventilation. An under cabinet range hood is an excellent choice. This type of range hood has a smaller profile that allows it to fit right under the cabinet for easy installation. They’re typically sized 30 or 36 inches.

Under-cabinet range hoods generally have a compact, modern look, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find a range of options. You can go for a stainless steel, matte black, or matte white finish to coordinate with your other kitchen appliances. You’ll find models with curved or straight lines to suit your overall aesthetic.

2. Kitchen Wall Mount

Wall mount range hoods are just like they sound- they’re mounted securely against a wall over your stovetop. Typically, the bottom of the hood will be placed about 24 to 30 inches above your cooking surface for the best performance. Canopy style range hoods have increased in popularity in recent years. The elegant appearance of this type of range hood fits the more luxurious style many homeowners are going for.

You’ll find canopy wall mount range hoods with a pyramid-shaped hood and ones with a more tapered hood. Both styles can be converted to ductless with functional charcoal filters if you don’t have a duct.

3. Built-in

Looking for a type of kitchen hood that’s sleek and subtle? You’ll find it in a built-in cooking hood. These models may fade in the background as far as their appearance, but they definitely aren’t shy on delivering an excellent performance. With a powerful blower system, these unassuming models can provide top-notch suction and ventilation.

You might be wondering, “Aren’t built-ins the same as under cabinet range hoods?” Not exactly. These models can be inserted into a custom cabinet or hood. They won’t be noticeable or protrude from the location they are inserted into.

4. Kitchen Island

Kitchen islands serve as gorgeous centerpieces while providing extra countertop space and storage. You can use an island range hood to complement your kitchen’s style and ventilate the space. Most of these types of range hoods have a canopy or pyramid style that’ssized 30 or 36 inches.

Island range hoods are mounted to the ceiling, rather than against a wall. The ductwork will also run through the ceiling. Before you install the hood, make sure you have the proper clearance to run the vent through the ceiling.

5. Ductless vs Ducted

Did you know many models of range hoods can be made ductless? You’ll want to purchase a ductless model if you’re not able to connect the range hood to a duct in your kitchen. Ductless cooking hoods typically use a filter to clean the air. At Hauslane, we use functional charcoal filters in our ductless range hoods to trap grease and remove odors from the air.

Once you select the right type of range hood, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying a brand new cooking experience! Stay tuned to the Hauslane blog for even more tips and tricks.

Breathing in the fumes from the stove is most likely to cause negative respiratory problems. The best way to prevent this from happening is to make sure that your kitchen is properly ventilated. Proper ventilation of a kitchen is done by installing a range hood over the stove to filter and ventilate the air while you are cooking. If you’re interested in learning more about our kitchen range hoods, get in touch with Hauslane today.
